I'm undertaking a project for BNB (managed by BIC - Book Industry
Communication) looking at the feasibility of using the ONIX format for
bibliographic data transmission between the book trade and libraries in the
UK
ONIX (Online Information Exchange) is being implemented by UK and US
publishers for the transmission of product information to bibliographic
agencies, Internet booksellers and others. I want to make sure that ONIX
is developed as a format that CAN be used by libraries if they wish and
does not just end up as a 'trade format'.
My first step to achieve this is to find out libraries' current cataloguing
practice and what bibliographic data is needed - for data retrieval,
acquisitions, OPAC etc. - regardless of whether it's currently available in
MARC. To this end I've devised a questionnaire which I would like as many
UK libraries as possible to complete (by 31st January 2001).
If you would like your library to be involved please let me know (with a
contact name) and indicate whether you would prefer to receive information
by e-mail or post. I would also be interested in any comments or
observations.
Further information on ONIX is available on the BIC website
(www.bic.org.uk). A mapping document from ONIX to MARC21 is available on
the Library of Congress website (www.loc.gov/marc/onix2marc.html).
