1. New Netskills Workshop - Exploring XML
Due to popular demand Netskills has created a new workshop that explores the
use of XML (eXtensible Mark Up Language).

The advent of XML heralds a revolution in web development, providing a means
of delivering information in a variety of ways and to different devices. XML
offers new opportunities and challenges to both people creating web pages
and those involved in sophisticated back-end information systems and is set
to provide a powerful and flexible alternative to the long established
language HTML.

This practical workshop, aimed at experienced HTML authors, introduces a
wide range of new and exciting possibilities from multiple content
transformations to creating WAP pages and producing XML from databases.

The follwing 'Exploring XML' workshops have been scheduled:

28th June 2001 - Peter Froggatt Centre, Queens University Belfast
24th July 2001 - Manchester Computing Centre
19th Sept 2001 - Oxford University Computing Service
Online booking forms and a full workshop description is available at:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html

2. New Netskills Administrator
Following the departure of Gillian Brown, Lisa Cornforth has been appointed
as the new Netskills Administrator. Netskills would like to wish Gillian
every success in her new appointment and welcome Lisa to the team.

3. Revealing another Full Monty, 4th-7th September 2001
After the success of the previous Full Monty events, Netskills have
scheduled the following 4 days of workshops for the 4th-7th September 2001
at Newcastle University

4th Sept 2001 - Content Management on the Web
5th Sept 2001 - Web Site Development with Active Server Pages (ASP)
6th Sept 2001 - Server-Side Site Management Techniques
7th Sept 2001 - Databases on the Web
Any of the one day sessions can be attended individually, or you can do the
whole event as a four day workshop. Discounted prices are available for
those attending more than one day.

Further information is available at:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/news/stop-press-current.html

4. Book Now for September Workshops
Just a quick reminder that Netskills will take advanced bookings for
workshops scheduled for the beginning of the next academic session in
September.

Alternatively, it can prove to be very economic to provide Netskills
workshops at your own institution as part of a staff development programme.
With the Netskills diary currently fully booked for onsite training, look
ahead to the autumn to book training to meet your organisation's needs.
Details and costs are available from the Netskills web site at:
http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/ibw

5. Financial Year Ends with Budgets Unspent?
Many of you will be approaching the end of the financial year with some
money left to spend. Why not place an order for a licence for Netskills
Training Materials? Buy a few training modules at £50 each to use throughout
your institution for the next twelve months, or go for the Netskills Gold
Scheme, allowing access to all 44 currently available modules and other
benefits at £1400(+VAT).

Go straight to the materials system at:
http://materials.netskills.ac.uk
or email [log in to unmask]

6. Netskills Season Tickets
In connection with the above news item you might also like to take advantage
of the discounts available for advance purchase of Netskills workshops.
Purchase 5, 10 or 20 workshops for use by anyone from your institution to
attend at any time during the next year and you will receive discounts of
5%, 7.5% and 10% respectively.

Contact [log in to unmask] if you wish to take advantage of this offer.

7. Training Module of Month
**Further JavaScript**

JavaScript provides a simple extension to HTML which is easy to learn and
can quickly produce sophisticated and effective results. Anyone with a basic
knowledge of HTML can enhance the potential of their Web site for teaching,
learning, marketing and general information provision using Java Script.

'Further JavaScript' follows-on from the Netskills module 'Introduction to
JavaScript' and takes JavaScript a step further by exploring events and
functions for developing more complex interactive effects.

The module provides an opportunity to:

Define and use simple JavaScript functions
Use and amended JavaScript functions written by someone else
Pass arguments into and out of a function
Use a function to validate user input
