a) Christmas Closure
--------------------
Please note:
The CHEST Office will be closed from 5:00pm on Friday 21st December 2001
to 9:00am on Wednesday 2nd January 2002. May we take this opportunity
to wish all CHEST's contacts and suppliers a merry Christmas and a
happy New Year from everyone in the CHEST team.
b)Payments to EduServ (CHEST)
-----------------------------
We have received several payment cheques made out to 'CHEST' rather than
to 'EduServ'. These are not being accepted by our bank so please will
you ensure that all cheques are made payable to 'EduServ' to avoid
delays or to avoid cheques having to be returned and resubmitted.
c)CHEST Licence Conditions
--------------------------
CHEST has recently received licences for different products (both data
and software) from a few institutions where changes have been made (by
the people submitting the licences) to the Licence Conditions.
The Licence conditions and agreement to which they refer have been
negotiated in such a way as to obtain the maximum benefit for the widest
possible community and are not subject to change. CHEST has been
negotiating licences on behalf of the Education Community for over 13
years. If your institution is unable to agree to the terms the only
expedient is for the institution to renegotiate with the supplier, which
would undoubtedly result in the institution having to pay both a higher
cost and in bearing the cost/effort of such renegotiation.
d)CHEST/OUP Agreement for the American National Biography
---------------------------------------------------------
CHEST is pleased to announce that an agreement has now been
signed with Oxford University Press for the provision of the American
National Biography Online.
The print version of the American National Biography is also available
through this agreement at a significantly reduced price.
The American National Biography contains around 17,500 biographies and
includes people who died as recently as 1995. It is designed to be as
inclusive as possible, containing entries on groups ranging from
pre-colonial Viking explorers to the men and women of the Challenger
Shuttle crew. As such it should be of interest not only to historians,
but to anyone working within a broad range of social sciences and
humanities subjects.
This is a 3 year agreement which commences 1st January 2002 and expires
31st December 2004 and it is open to Higher Education Sites, Further
Education Sites, Research Councils, CHEST Ireland Sites, Associated
Sites and IATUL Sites.
Pricing is as follows:
List Price CHEST Price
5 Concurrent Users £600.00 £400.00 (+VAT)
10 Concurrent Users £850.00 £550.00 (+VAT)
Print Version £1500.00 £750.00
For full details of the agreement please see the CHEST website at:

e)New Justis Databases
----------------------
Context has now released 2 new databases which are being added to the
portfolio of Justis databases available with Athens authentication. The
databases are HERMES and ECJ Proceedings. HERMES will shortly be added
automatically as an additional resource for those institutions currently
subscribing to Parlianet and ECJ Proceedings for those institutions
currently subscribing to CELEX.
Brief descriptions of these databases have been provided by Context:
"HERMES contains the press releases and announcements issued by most of
the major government departments in England and Scotland, dating back to
January 2000. The content, provided by COI, the government’s executive
agency for publicity procurement, is very wide ranging and contains the
full text of most of the significant announcements issued by the British
Government.
This information is of great interest to all companies, institutions,
charities and trade associations which are affected by government
announcements of any sort: changes in regulations or procedures,
construction programmes, the retail price figures - all these are
typically accompanied by an explanatory press release.
Around 9,500 releases a year are added to HERMES, an average of 40 each
working day. The daily peak can rise to around 70 per day on a very few
days of the year, though the number falls to about 15 releases per day
during slow periods. Each release includes the department of origin, the
headline and the full text as issued."
"ECJ Proceedings contains the Proceedings of the European Court of
Justice, a printed publication that provides information on the judicial
proceedings of the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance,
including short summaries of judgments, and brief notes on opinions
delivered by the Advocates-General and on new cases brought during the
previous week. It also records the more important events happening
during the daily life of the institution.
ECJ Proceedings is updated weekly when the court is sitting."
Details of other databases available via CHEST may be found at

Special reductions are available for sites subscribing before 31st
December 2001 - see Data Messenger of 5th October 2001

f)FirstSearch User Group termination
------------------------------------
The following message is forwarded on behalf of Malcolm
Taggart, Chair of the FirstSearch User Group (UK)
___________________________________________________
The Extraordinary General Meeting of the FirstSearch User Group
took place as announced at the Kensington Hilton on 4th December.
Those present were: Andrew Evans (OCLC), Heather Franklin
(CHEST), Marilyn Hird (Secretary), Nicholas Rawson (OCLC),
Malcolm Taggart (Chair), Ellen Parry Williams (Treasurer).
In the absence of any other members or indeed any feedback on the
proposals regarding its future
<http://www.dur.ac.uk/Library/fs/termination>, it was decided to wind
up the User Group. The general feeling was that despite previous
achievements in areas such as enhancement of the interface,
ATHENS authentication, and connectivity, the User Group had run
its course.
The practical consequences are that the web site will be brought
down by the end of December, the UG mailing list will be
withdrawn and the bank account closed. The Treasurer will
redistribute the remaining funds in the account to current
members. The outgoing Officers propose to meet in the New Year to
sort out any outstanding practical issues.
