As part of the process of building for the Johannesburg conference on
sustainable development, there is imho an opportunity for us to
contribute to the local agenda 21 process, which shortens as LA21 and
gives us another layer :)
I'm going to be organising a conference here at Kingston on the
involvement of the community, the university and the polity in the
local agenda 21 process some time around next July as a build up
partly of consciousness raising and will be approaching the local
public library, the hospital library, the education department of the
local authority, as it seems that sustainable development, health,
education and planning must be related.
This seems to give an opportunity to IFLA in July to pick up something
similar so we could have ifLA21.. and call on all libraries in the
world to hold exhibitions, promotions, for the lead up to the World
Summit? An obvious emphasis would be the ideas of Geddes, Mumford,
Sharp, Mcharg (note strong scottish emphasis for Dumfermlin and
Glasgow) which are contained in books, along with local activities
promoted by local organisations. The idea that the "world leaders" at
the Summit could point to the work of the world's libraries might
bring to us some recognition we are always bleating we need.
If anyone is already planning something along these lines, could you
let me know and we can see if the whole might be made larger than the
sum of the parts?
