There has been a great deal of interest in forthcoming NEMLAC training.
Below is a summary of the events this year. Please circulate this

North East Museums, Libraries & Archives Council
Education & Audience Development Training 2001


Date:  Wednesday 25 April (10 - 3.30)
Title:  Sharing Resources: Cross-sector Education Day
Venue: Newcastle Central Library, Newcastle
Cost:    members A35; non-members A320
Speakers: Sue Wilkinson, Stephen Allen, Andrea Barker, Fiona Talbot,

What is Re:source ? What is NEMLAC ? And how do these organisations see
the
future of education, learning & access? Organised by NEMLAC and the
Group
for Education in Museums (GEM), this day will explore the recent
coming-together of libraries, archives and museums at national and
regional
levels. Participants will have the opportunity to make contact with
colleagues and hear about good practice in lifelong learning and
education
across the library, archive, gallery and museum domains. In addition,
workshops will focus on developing practical ways of co-operating
across the
sectors.

Title: Funding access, education & inclusion projects (Heritage Lottery
Fund
seminar)
Venue: House of Recovery, Newcastle
Cost:    NEMLAC/ Information North/ Archives members: A310;

Speakers: Helen Jackson, Sharon Goddard & Laura Williams

This day has been arranged to inform library, archive, museum, arts and
gallery staff of the funding available through the Heritage Lottery
Fund for
access, education/ learning, audience development and inclusion
initiatives.
HLF want to encourage more applications for education, access and
inclusion
projects (either from individual venues or from cultural agencies in
partnership).  Helen Jackson, Deputy Director (Research), Sharon
Goddard,
Policy Adviser (Education) and Laura Williams, Policy & Research
Officer,
all from HLF, will outline current grant programme opportunities which
support HLF policy and priorities and discuss future HLF funding
opportunities, including the new simplified application process. This
is the
first such HLF seminar for the regions.

Title:         The Shared Space - Working with Culturally Diverse
Audiences
Venue: Newcastle Central Library

Speaker: Naseem Khan, Arts Council of England

Naseem Khan is Senior Policy Officer (Cultural Diversity) at the Arts
Council of England. This is one of a series of regional training days
Naseem
has run for museum, gallery, library & arts professionals focusing on
working with ethnic minority audiences. The training day will combine
theory
and practice, and includes a workshop element, case studies and
first-hand
accounts of being involved in projects. Please book early.


Date:  Thursday 28 June (10.30 - 4.30)
Title:  Involving Local Communities Centres for Curiosity & Imagination
Workshop
Venue: Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle
Cost:    A330 (inc. lunch).
Speakers: Jocelyn Dodd, University of Leicester; Suzie Tutchell,
Community &
Outreach Manager, Discover, East London; Helen Sinclair, Head of
Education,
Tyne & Wear Museums.

How can you make sure your venue is truly rooted in its local
community?
This will consider consultation, volunteering, and events and
activities
which encourage local people to become involved. Although focusing on
Centres for Curiosity & Imagination, this workshop will be of
considerable
use to museums, arts venues, archives and libraries. For more

Title:  Working with Young People (Outside of Formal Education)
Venue: Redcar/ Cleveland area

non-members: A330Speaker:  Suzanne Ryder

Suzanne Ryder will run this workshop looking at young people as actual
and
potential visitors and users of arts venues, museums, archives and
libraries. The workshop will examine the particular needs of this
audience
and help equip you with the skills to plan projects and work with young
people in the long-term. Local case studies will be used to illustrate
good
practice in the North East region.

Title: Something for Everyone? Lifelong Learning Conference
Venue:  Segedunum, Wallsend, Tyne & Wear
Cost:     A35
Speakers: Emily Leach, clmg; Titus Alexander, Learning Initiatives.

Are we making the most of our informal places of learning? Can we hope
to
offer something for everyone? In conjunction with the Campaign for
Learning
in Museums & Galleries (clmg), the Northern Arts Education Forum and
GEM
(North East), this year's Regional Education Conference will focus on
the
wide variety of lifelong learning initiatives that have taken place in
galleries, libraries, museums and arts venues in the region over the
last
few years.  The outcome of work supported by clmg and the DfEE will be
explored and examples of good practice from libraries, archives and
arts
organisations in the region will also be examined. Titus Alexander, one
of
the UK's leading authorities on family learning, will give the keynote
speech and facilitate the afternoon workshops. The afternoon session
will
concentrate on improving networks, increasing collaboration at local
and
sub-regional levels, and on developing lifelong learning strategies and
practices at your venue.


Please note, we cannot invoice for amounts under A325.
There is a 50% cancellation charge once we receive a Booking Form.
