On Thurs 18th Jan I posed the question whether any libraries had sent
out an introductory CD for new students.
Responses were:
2 people telling me about the interesting project at Deakin Univ in
the USA, where pre-arrival students are sent a double CD,the "Deakin
Learning Toolkit", with information and also the software they will
need on arrival. See http://www.deakin.edu.au/dlt/welcome/index.html
3 people: "Why not do it all on the web". Answer: Yes, we've got
a wonderful set of web pages, but (a) some pre-arrival students might
not be willing to spend a lot of phone bill on finding out about the
library, but might look at a CD (which can also have some video clips
etc, more than is practical via modem), and (b) some sponsorship was
on offer for a CD.
1 person "against it on environmental grounds".
1 college developing something for in-house use, not thinking in
terms of posting it out
1 business librarian considering something on the same lines for
newcomers to the firm, especially without much IT experience.
My thanks to all who responded. We're still thinking about our CD.
