This course is designed to give advice to those undertaking film and
television research for the first time - either for film and television
production or for academic study. It will also aid librarians or lecturers
seeking to reference programmes and clips for use in teaching.
The course gives an introduction to film and television collections in the
UK; information sources and services; searching the Web for film and
television sources; copyright - including educational exceptions. The
practicalities of using footage are covered with sessions on the
characteristics of film and videotape - film gauges and components;
videotape formats; finding transfer facilities; using a Steenbeck viewing
table. Guest speakers discuss Film Research from an Industry Perspective and
Negotiating with a Film Archive.
The Council has close links with film and television archives, and produces
the Researcher's Guide Online and The Researcher's Guide: Film, Television,
Radio & Realted Documentation Collections in the UK. It also holds the
databases of the MAP-TV Guide to European Film and Television Collections,
the British Universities Newsreel Project, the AVANCE database of
educational audio-visual materials, and the Television Index. The
Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching (TRILT) will also be
introduced, which will provide a comprehensive listing of television and
radio programming from a learning and teaching perspective.
Cost per person, per course, including light lunch and refreshments:
GBP 95.00 (GBP 80.85 + VAT); member's rate GBP 80.00 (GBP 68.08 + VAT).
The British Universities Film & Video Council exists to promote the study
and use of moving images in education and research. It runs a regular
