The Cranston Library, founded on 14th March 1701 by the Revd. Andrew
Cranston, is situated in a small chamber above the vestry in St Mary's
Church. It is thought to be the first public lending library in England,
and contains works of literature, history, geography and classics, as
well as theology. The Trustees endeavour to maintain the Library as an
early 18th century library, and many of the books have been there since
its foundation.
