Please accept our apologies for the difficulties you may have
experienced connecting to CatchWord or Emerald Library over the
past four days.
As promised, additional CatchWord servers are being commissioned
as a matter of urgency to bring our service back up to speed.
Two are already live: one in New York and another in CatchWord's
Abingdon office. Although these do not directly serve the UK
academic community, they will reduce the tendency of non-JANET
users to load the JANET-based servers.
An additional server is being installed at Cranfield University
on Friday March 2nd (tomorrow), with two more to follow by
Thursday 8th at the University of Bath. We will be putting
redirects in place so that anyone linking to an existing named
server will be sent to the fastest of the five. This will more
than double the existing capacity of the network for the UK
academic community and will ensure that the two services are
fully available and running at an acceptable speed.
Once again we apologise for the problems that have occurred.
Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have further
questions or concerns.

Subject: Catchword/Emerald go-slow
I guess we are all suffering from the incredible slowness and the
server overload for Catchword and Emerald journals. The current
'Server too busy 'message from Catchword promises:
For UK academic users an additional CatchWord server will be
placed within the JANET network within the next three days. For
UK users outside the JANET network two extra servers are being
commissioned; one will be live at CatchWord's Abingdon office by
the end of Wednesday 28th February, and another will be
in place in London within three days
Nice to see they are reacting quickly, though after the
frustrations for users and harassed support staff this week the
upgrades can't come too soon!
Since the problem is being resolved I raise the issue largely for
the record as another example of a difficulty in trying to
maintain a
quality service to users. However, some communication on this
list from Catchword to inform us of what was going on would have
been welcome.
