Dear Colleagues:
While surfing the internet news sources, I ran across three news reports that
might be of interest.
Two items relate to what MAY be Ethiopia's position in its dispute with
Eritrea. A lengthy article in the Addis Tribune (9 Feb 2001) reproduces part
of an academic paper on "Colonial Treaties in the Context of the Current
Ethio-Eritrean Border Dispute and Settlement." The author of the piece is
not identified and the second portion of the paper is scheduled to appear in
a later issue. However, it might be worth a look
(http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200102120404.html). Please note that
I do not personally agree with this analysis. A related story appeared in
Visafric (Asmara, 7 Feb 2001), "Now You See It, Now You Don't: The Case of
the Disappearing Border"
(http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200102070074.html). This story
purports to describe the map that Ethiopia will provide to the UN commission.
This map reportedly depicts no northern border with Eritrea in the disputed
region.
The third item briefly describes Niger's efforts to set up support teams for
its ICJ case about the dispute with Benin over the Lete Islands in the Niger
River.
Regards,
Dan Dzurek
