Sorry about the previous unwitting broadcast about my subscription status.
I want to let everyone know about an interesting conference on 20th century
heritage being held in Adelaide Australia in Novermber 2001, organised by
ICOMOS Australia. Details below.
Lyn Leader-Elliott.
On 28 November - 2 December 2001 the Australia ICOMOS organisation will
host a national conference on 20th Century Heritage in Adelaide. The
conference, while principally focused on Australasian content, will address
questions of heritage conservation, registration, management and
interpretation of the last 50 years of cultural heritage assets. The topic
spectrum will include architecture, landscape architecture, public art,
engineering, archaeology, etc.,
This conference seeks to focus on our recent heritage of the last 100
years-our recent cultural legacy. It will attempt to open up the debate as
to how we are going to address this legacy. It will also seek to heighten
the need to act quickly to address this legacy given our consumer societal
relationship with our designs, products, and creations.
This heritage includes:
o architectural projects
o landscape architecture projects
o planning projects
o public art projects transportation projects
o engineering projects
o archaeology projects
o cultural installations
o cultural landscapes
o design as an exploration of individual philosophies and inquiries
o everyday cultural heritage, places and patterns
o contemporary indigenous heritage and places.
Key questions are:
o what constitutes the last 50 years of our legacy,
o what is the spectrum of this legacy,
o what will it involve to address and quantify its contents,
o what do we need to prioritise and what criteria are relevant,
o how do we address cultural accretions, like public art, and formally
include it within our legacy,
o how do we identify, assess, and evaluate what we need to register and
view as our legacy,
o how do we introduce self-pride into and value our young 'heritage',
