‘Treasure and Portable Antiquities:
museum policies, practice and debates’
The general themes that we intend to discuss, particularly in relation
to museums in the north of England with archaeology collections, are:
metal detecting, 'amateur' collecting, the 1996 Treasure Act and the
government's on-going review of it, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the
role of archaeological finds liaison officers, and, above all, museum
archaeological collecting policies in northern England.
