A FAMILY AFFAIR
9 December
1030 to 1700 (coffee and tea from 1000)
with Gary Fellowes

Organisations are like families. They grow like families. From small beginnings they develop and expand. New strands may be adopted or developed as opportunities present themselves, enabling further growth of the organisational family.
And like the family, organisations consist of people who adopt parental, adult and child-like roles and personas. An organisation develops a culture that reflects the way it has grown up along the way - it has become the sum of its experiences the same way that we, as grown-ups, are moulded by our childhood experiences.
During the day we will use Transactional Analysis to consider the way organisations and the people in them behave. How, for instance, we might approach a coaching role with a colleague, would it be from a Parent, Adult or Child ego state - what are the differences, how might the recipient react, what could be a better way? How would we define the culture of the organisation we work in and how can we enable ourselves to be as happy and effective as possible while we are at work?
We shall consider this in the light of the way people react to those around them at this time of the year. How children are helped to assemble the more complicated toys; the toy then probably being tested for a while before the child gets a go and then being supervised to ensure that it is used correctly.
It is interesting to reflect on how such experiences as children affect the way we are with colleagues as well as friends and family. During the day we shall investigate via experiential activities, discussions, and reflection what our Child, Adult & Parent ego states are like and how these impact on the way we are with those at work and at home. We shall investigate via experiential activities, discussions, and reflection how organisational cultures emerge and what this means in practice.

Gary is a freelance trainer and consultant specialising in the interpersonal skills aspects of management development, helping people and organisations to become more effective by understanding the consequences of the different ways people behave at work. He works with groups and individuals at all levels in a wide range of organisations. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Member of the Institute of Transactional Analysis and a Member of the Institute of Management.
