> SEPTEMBER 2001 BRIEFING FROM THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING (ILT)
>
> * The ILT has published its Annual Report and Financial Statements for
> 2000-2001. Copies may be obtained from [log in to unmask] The
> Annual Report will be presented to members at the Annual General Meeting
> on 27 September at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
> The meeting will be preceded by a Symposium and discussion on 'Widening
> Participation and Promoting Student Retention', led by Professor Mantz
> Yorke, which will explore the tensions between widening participation and
> student retention as well as discussing Performance Indicators and
> implications for Learning and Teaching Strategies.
> * The ILT has to date received over 9,300 applications for membership.
> At the end of September 7,170 applicants had been accepted into
> membership. Applications are continuing to be received at rates of up to
> 250 per week. Recruitment is running well ahead of the ILT's target of
> 5,280 members by September, and compares very favourably with the
> membership growth rates of comparable professional bodies that do not
> confer a licence to practise.
> * As part of its remit to develop a local and regional structure, the
> ILT has set up a programme of Members' Regional Network Forums in 11 local
> or national regions. These are free or low-cost events, hosted by members
> at their own institutions. Forums were held in Scotland, Wales and London
> in September and a further five events are scheduled for October and
> November. The first members' Special Interest Group meeting, on Virtual
> Learning Environments, will take place on 14 November.
> * 26 applications have been received for the ILT's newly launched
> Small Grants Scheme. These grants are available to members who wish to
> undertake activities such as action research, the production of case
> studies or other forms of networking, publication or dissemination in
> relation to learning and teaching. They are also available for
> international travel in relation to learning and teaching activities,
> thanks to support from the Hewett Driver Education Trust.
> * The ILT is about to publish a short free guide to teaching for those
> new to the profession, such as postgraduate teaching assistants, which
> will be made available to its Associates.
> * Planning is well advanced for the ILT's third Annual Conference, to
> be held at Heriot-Watt University from 26-28 June 2002, and a number of
> advance bookings have already been taken. The theme will be 'Learning to
> Learn'. Further information, together with online booking and session
> proposal forms, will be available in October.
