Application Developer
Environment Modelling and GIS Group
Salary - Upto £28K
ADAS's Wolverhampton Research Team have a requirement for an application developer to support our development of agri-environmental decision support systems and modelling tools. The successful applicant will be skilled in Visual Basic, DAO/ADO and ActiveX development, and will have experience of software development and maintenance. Candidates will have excellent communication skills and feel comfortable working in a team environment. Candidates will also be able to demonstrate an enthusiastic and innovative approach to their work. It is expected that candidates will be educated to at least degree level, preferably with a background in Earth or Environmental Sciences.
Job Outline
The successful applicant will support scientific colleagues in the development and maintenance of decision support systems for use in strategic environment research principally for government policy development and implementation. Such work will include the development of system specifications, integration of agri-environment databases with models, and development of user interfaces. A wider interest in the use of IT for knowledge transfer will be actively encouraged. In addition the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the wider exploitation of IT in support of ADAS's environmental management expertise.
Key Responsibilities
· Maintenance and support of existing environmental decision support systems
· Design and implementation of user interfaces to agri-environment models and databases
· Development of on-line help and model documentation
· Provision of programming support and advice to scientific colleagues
· Contribution to the further development of ADAS's decision support capability
Key Skills
· Interface design
· Integration of databases with environment models
· Numerate
· Visual Basic (5 and 6) with experience of DAO and/or ADO, and ActiveX development
· Microsoft Access and SQL
Desirable Skills
· Familiarity with the construction of interfaces to spatial data and models using GIS components
· Experience of C or Fortran
· Experience of system analysis and familiarity with project management tools
