The IT Assistant will apply IT to archaeological problems, execute the IT, and contribute to the reporting of the methodology and results.
The successful candidate will be responsible for two core tasks:
1. Work on the Brickwork Plan field-systems project (English Heritage funded project).
It is anticipated that the person appointed will from a key member of the team producing management and published reports on the results from fieldwalking cropmark field-systems of broadly Romano-British date. The tasks assigned to the IT Assistant include: checking and amendment of the cropmark plot and morphology categorization; production of the distribution plans of cropmarks, artefacts, topography, geology and hydrology using GIS and surface modelling packages; an assessment of the utility of the GIS for the project. ARCVIEW, IMAGINE, MS ACCESS and SURFER will be used to achieve the required products.
2. Manage the Unit's network of Windows 95/NT computers in conjunction with another member of staff and assist staff with their IT requirements.
Most of the regular Unit staff have basic computing skills, but often require assistance in production of surveys, drawings and the use of GIS packages for appropriate projects. The successful candidate will advise staff, teach them, or conduct the computing tasks for them, as appropriate. In addition to the programs listed above, the Unit currently uses AUTOCAD, AUTOSKETCH, MAPINFO and the Microsoft Office family of packages.
Duties will include:
· using programs to agreed research goals
· advising staff on the ways in which their data can be analysed and manipulated
· carry out specialist computing work, such as GIS analysis, for appropriate projects
· provide support for staff on routine computing issues.
Candidates should preferably have an IT qualification and will be able to demonstrate a competence in the above (or similar) packages. Candidates with an archaeological background, or proven interest in archaeology will be preferred. Familiarity with analysis of cropmarks and spatial analysis will be an advantage. Candidates should be flexible, methodical and patient.
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of one year.
