Please bring the following to the attention of students who are interested
in research in the use of DTMs in geomorphology:
PhD Studentship - Department of Geography - University of Sheffield
National to continental scale analysis of topography using Digital Terrain
Models for the study of long term landscape evolution, tectonics and climate
change
Deadline for applications: June 15th
It has been decided to extend the deadline for applications for this PhD
studentship which is available at Sheffield University Geography department.
Numerous models of long term landform development are being written and are
being used to increase our understanding of the role of both surface
processes and tectonic activity in the development of natural landscapes
over large
spatial and temporal scales. Model output is normally tested by comparison
between the predicted
landscape and natural landscapes but such tests are often not quantitative,
and do not always draw on existing knowledge of the characteristics of
landscape produced under different process regimes. There is therefore a
need for a range of quantitative measures of landscape form which can be
used for more rigorous testing of landform development models and this is
the focus of this research. Further details are given in the attached
document.
The studentship would suit someone with a background in geography, geology
or geophysics, with an interest in GIS and/or DTM analysis. No prior
experience with GIS necessary, since training can be given, but a
familiarity with some form of computer-based analysis is essential. The
studentship provides full maintenance, and tuition fees for students from
European Union countries. Applicants from non-EU countries would have to
find additional funding to cover the extra tuition fees for overseas
students (approx. £5K per year)
The studentship is available from August 1st. It is hoped to hold interviews
in late June. The deadline for applications is Friday June 15th . The
application form can be downloaded from the University web site:
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/~gradsch/Recruitment/ApplicationForm/index.html
Applications should be sent to:
Ms S.L.Rewston
Department of Geography
University of Sheffield

To expedite matters, it would be helpful if candidates could also arrange
for references to be sent directly to the above address as well - a
refereee's form can also be downloaded from the University web site.
