Geophysics Research Group
Research Officer - Fault Network Modelling
Ref: C01/387
The Geophysics Research Group seeks a Research Officer to
work on an EPSRC funded project to investigate the nature of
the Gutenberg-Richter relation in a state-of-the-art 3-D fault
network numerical model which will run on a "parallel virtual
machine" created by linking clusters of PCs. The specific
objectives of the project are: 1) to develop the required
computational resources by creating a parallel virtual machine
based primarily on existing computer capacity, 2) to modify an
existing fault network computer model and parallelize it to utilize
the above facility, and 3) to investigate the conditions under
which power-law magnitude frequency distributions are
observed both regionally and on individual faults.
The successful applicant will hold a degree in
physics/geophysics, computing science or related subject. He or
she will work on all aspects of the science, under the direction of
the project co-ordinator, and will be particularly responsible for
developing the parallel environment and parallelizing the pre-
existing fault network code. Strong computing and programming
skills are essential and an interest in earthquake physics is
desirable.
Additional information about the project and the Geophysics
Research Group can be found on our website at
http://www.science.ulst.ac.uk/crg/geophys/index.html or by
contacting Dr. Sandy Steacy ([log in to unmask]).
The post will be fixed term for 15 months and is based at
Coleraine campus.
Commencing Salary: Up to £21,290 per annum
Closing Date: 19 November 2001
