Post-Doctoral Research Assistant
Ethiopian Seismic Project
Start Date : 1st January 2002 (but may be subject to change dependent on
applicant's requirements and the project schedule)
The Universities of Leicester, Leeds and Royal Holloway, London have just
been awarded a large UK Natural Environmental Research Grant to carry out a
major seismic programme to study the "Kinematics and Dynamics of Continental
Breakup above a Mantle Plume: Anatomy of the northern Ethiopian Rift". The
project will involve both controlled source and passive seismic experiments
to image the crust and upper mantle just prior to break-up in the northern
Ethiopian Rift, where the transition from continental rifting to incipient
ocean-floor spreading is captured.
Leicester University will co-ordinate the controlled source programme. This
will include a 400km long refraction / wide-angle reflection profile across
the rift in the vicinity of Addis Abeba. Eight shots will be fired into 450
seismic recorders along the profile. A PDRA is required for two years to
work with Professor Peter Maguire's seismic group at Leicester University,
on the preparation and data acquisition phase of the project and also the
data processing and interpretation to at least production of the first major
publication arising from the work.
Professor Maguire is at present seeking funds for the post. Candidates for
the post will have to apply for either a UK, European or US Fellowship
(dependent on nationality). Substantial interest in the project by a
well-qualified applicant, may result in the post being financially
underwritten.
Interested applicants should contact
