Dear Colleague,
Sir Harold Jeffreys
Financial Support for cataloguing of the Jeffreys archive.
The National Cataloguing Unit for the Archives of Contemporary Scientists (a
small unit at the University of Bath), which aims to locate, sort, list and
index the archives of eminent British scientists and thus make accessible
for scholarly research the source materials for the history of science, are
looking for financial support for cataloguing the archives of Sir Harold
Jeffreys. The Director of NCUACS, Peter Harper, states quite simply his
belief in "the importance of making accessible the correspondence,
unpublished drafts, research records, photographs and so on of such a
fundamental figure in the history of geophysics".
The unit has already catalogued the archives of Sir Edward Bullard and is
now tackling those of Keith Runcorn. They have approached the Royal
Astronomical Society for a donation towards the cost of undertaking the
cataloguing of the Jeffreys archive. As an RAS councillor I am soliciting
the views of UK geophysicists as to the value of this work and would be more
than grateful if you were able to contact me by email ([log in to unmask]) before
Friday 29th June to give me your views. (The next Council meeting is on
Tuesday 3rd July). The RAS is considering the amount it might donate, and
the views of practicing geophysicists would be very useful in helping
Council come to a decision on the matter.
I very much look forward to hearing from you
Peter Maguire
