A three-year contract position, with potential to become tenured, is
available in the above field, for commencement as early as possible in 2002.

Expressions of interest are sought from people, ideally with one or more
years postdoctoral experience, but an outstanding applicant who has just
completed a PhD would be very appointable.  There is some scope for
applications from "conventional" structural geologists, or from other
outstanding geologists with a demonstrated ability to apply their skills to
the studies of controls of mineralisation in deformed terrains.   The
person appointed to the position will report to the Head of School.

Applicants must have:
® an appropriate PhD
® an international publication record, or, if an early career researcher,
firm evidence that one will be rapidly developed
® the ability to work as a team member in an active research school
® a demonstrated record or the potential to secure external grants
® a high level of training and experience in structural geology

It would also be desirable for the candidate to have:
® training and experience in deformed mineralised rocks
® expertise in any of the following: geophysical exploration for orebodies,
structural control of mineralisation, deformation of ore deposits
® expertise in higher level computing and data manipulation
® appropriate teaching experience or demonstrated aptitude for teaching
® a track record of collaboration with the minerals industry.

The appointee will be able to provide advanced level teaching in
structural/economic geology within the School of Earth Sciences and will
contribute to research in this field.  The effective supervision of honours
and postgraduate students is a key requirement of the position.  The
appointee will be expected to play a significant role in our ongoing
efforts to improve industry training and skills through our Master of
Applied Science, Economic Geology Honours and Bachelor of Science in
Geology and Economic Geology programs, and other initiatives in training
that will be sponsored jointly by the Minerals Council of Australia, the
Federal Government, and James Cook University.  He/she will be expected to
have an active role within the Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative
Research Centre in which the School of Earth Sciences has a major
involvement.  The Centre will link industry and research providers in
developing the field of mineral exploration in Australia.

James Cook University is the major provider of higher education in northern
Australia.  Townsville has a population of about 185,000.  As well as
offering the facilities of an important regional city, Townsville provides
the recreation lure of the tropics.  It is a growing centre for tourism and
attracts many people to its climate and relaxed lifestyle.  Visitors are
offered easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and coastal islands, the
Atherton Tablelands and Cairns to the north, and also to the Australian
outback and historical mining towns.  Townsville is the operational centre
for hard-rock mining in Queensland.

The School of earth sciences has eleven full-time academic staff, nine
postdoctoral and research fellows, over fifty PhD students, and healthy
courses with minerals industry-oriented programs at Honours and Masters
level.  The research facilities available at JCU, and the publication
output of the School in international journals, are amongst the very best
in Australia.

The increasing demand for postgraduate research in economic geology,
particularly in deformed rocks and structural control of mineralisation,
means we have a new opportunity to employ a geoscientist with skills in
mineralisation and deformation.  Presently, the School has three tenured
faculty and five research fellows in economic geology, as well as several
other staff involved heavily in economic geology projects.  We have a very
strong track record in structural controls of mineralisation, as well as in
microstructural, metamorphic and geochemical/fluid aspects of

The closing date for applications is June 30th, 2001.  The salary scale for
the position is in the range of $50334 - $70625 plus an extra 17%
superannuation. JCU's Flexible Remuneration Scheme for motor vehicles, etc.
