Geophysicist
A position exists for a Geophysicist at postdoctoral or MSc level to
undertake geophysical surveys to delineate the courses of 'buried
valleys' in the Munster region. The position is funded by the HEA as
part of the PRTLI2 round of funding, which has also provided for the
establishment of an Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at
University College Cork, to be located at Ringaskiddy on Cork
Harbour. It is intended to use sustainable forms of energy to supply
all of the energy needs of the building and low enthalpy geothermal
energy is one of the sustainable energy sources being considered. The
presence of a deep buried valley, infilled with glaciofluvial gravels,
underlying the floodplain of the R. Lee in Cork, a relic of the
considerably lower sea levels during the Quaternary glaciation,
suggests that other such buried valleys exist in the Munster
region. The intention is to locate and delineate these buried valleys
using geophysical techniques such as large scale resistivity surveys,
electrical tomography, Vertical Electrical Sounding and EM, assess the
sand and gravel deposits infilling them, the porosity/hydraulic
conductivity relations of the gravels together with the groundwater
resource contained within them, and the potential for exploitation of
the groundwater as a low enthalpy geothermal resource. The position
will be for three years initially at a salary of IR£22,320 per annum
for a postdoctoral appointee and IR£16,000 per annum for a research
assistant appointee with an MSc. The successful candidate would be
required to design and conduct geophysical surveys in areas of
interest, process the data and prepare maps, and maintain equipment.
