Folks
It's bordering on the inhuman, but I would like to know more about the geophysics of the Gujarat earthquake (fault plane solution, reason for stress etc). I have seen nothing in the press. It seems to have been intraplate, although I have seen asides about previous activity in the region (Deccan-related failed rift?). The earthquake was large (I read 7.9 - is this correct?) and it seems that intraplate earthquakes are often large (eg the 1998 Balleny Is quake, New Madrid, Lisbon etc). Presumably, intraplate earthquakes are harder to predict (in that one cannot even spread monitoring equipment around intelligently). Can anyone say what can be learned from this event?
