Dear Mr Herrington,
I work with the oxidation of sulphide minerals, and use xrpd, Mössbauerspectroscopy and magnetic methods to monitor abiotic and biotic oxidation. Can you send the file to me? I`ve already herad of the Georange project but it was good you reminded us that 30 nov is the latest date for application.

regards

Ämne: New Funding Opportunity in Sweden

Dear all

I attach a letter below which is an invitation to submit research proposals
to GEORANGE, a new research initiative designed to support the development
of new mining activities in northern Sweden. I can forward you a .pdf file
of the announcement newsletter which gives a bit of background to the
initiative to interested parties - it is 1.5 Mbytes which is why I haven't
sent it with this email! Note the closure date for 'letters of intent' of
the 30th November 2001.

>INVITATION TO SUBMIT RESEARCH PROPOSALS.
>
>Georange is a non-profit organisation in Sweden and the clear objective of
>Georange is to promote new techniques and technologies in the exploration,
>mining and related activities in Norrbotten -Västerbotten area in Sweden,
>building on existing expertises and introducing new more methods. Another
>objective is to support efforts dedicated to the mitigation and
>remediation of environmental concerns related to mining. A major focus of
>Georange activities is in the funding of applied research applicable to
>Georange terms of reference. Georange will initiate research projects
>through a pre-screening procedure in order to select appropriate research
>activities. Prospective universities and other researchers are encouraged
>to submit "letter of intent" for Georange funded research. A scientific
>council will select suitable proposals and the researchers shall be
>invited to submit a full proposal to Georange. The committee shall review
>those proposals according to below described criteria and the selection is
>also a subject of for the Board available funds.
>
>Georange research is applied research, which means that normally the
>proposals shall not have duration longer than three years. There is
>however possible for researchers to submit a "phase 2" proposal if
>continuation research work is appropriate.
>
>One requirement from Georange is that high quality reports must be
>submitted regularly and on time, and these must be publishable in
>professional journals.
>
>REVIEW CRITERIA
>The Scientific committee shall review "letter of intent" and proposals
>with the following criteria:
>*Relevance to the Georange objectives (see below)
>*Involvement of industry
>*Innovation /originality
>*Quality of the research plan
>*Quality of the research team
>*Viability of work plan
>*Training component
>*Availability of infrastructure
>*Intention for publishing / presentation at congresses
> This criterion shall be used for evaluating progress reports.
>
>Each criterion will be judged using a four-grade scale. The letter of
>intents will be rated Yes, No and Yes modify.
>
>LETTER OF INTENT
>Georange is inviting researchers, companies and universities to submit
>"Letter of Intent" for Georange funded research. The invitation shall give
>information on the Georange objectives and the review criteria. A letter
>of intent shall contain maximum 1000 words or three A4 pages.
>
>The following headlines shall be covered in the letter of intent:
>*Title,
>*Objectives,
>*Brief description,
>*Scope and methodology,
>*Expected results,
>*Relevance for the Georange mission and objectives (see below)
>*Preliminary budget and timeframes.
>
>As an annex to the Letter of Intent a maximum one page CV of the main
>researcher and one page publication list with publications not older than
>five years shall be added. For the proposal relevant publications shall
>be marked with *.
>
>INVITATION TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL.
>Groups with successful letter of intents will be invited to submit a full
>proposal. A full proposal is a detailed description on the research work,
>and shall be maximum of 8 A4 pages, plus CVs for all members of the team
>and recent publications, maximum an additional 5 page. It shall cover the
>same headlines as the letter of intent but "amplified". Milestones shall
>be indicated in the full proposal, with a clear indication of the
>deliverables and the plan for publishing of the result. The document shall
>include two brief abstracts, one for the general public with simple
>wording and one for professionals.
>
>When a researcher is invited to submit a full proposal it shall be clearly
>indicated that the proposal shall be reviewed regularly. And it is
>therefore a subject of availability of funds and performance. Funding is
>also a matter of how the project is carried out. Funding may not be
>renewed if researchers fail to meet milestones or fail to submit
>satisfactory progress reports on schedule. In connection to the invitation
>to submit full proposals the researchers will be informed of the
>conditions valid for the Georange project stated by the 23 financing
>organisations. (not completely compiled yet)
>
>PROGRESS REPORT.
>A progress report (limited to 1000 words and a total of 3 A4 pages) shall
>contain:
>Description of research completed
>Results achieved to date
>Students involved
>Difficulties
>Funds consumed
>Publications/reports so far
>Publications/reports to come
>Milestones reached description.
>
>DEADLINES
>An "emergency" schedule for research activities has been decided. The
>reason for this tight schedule is to be able to start research activities
>as soon as possible. The schedule is as follows:
> 30 Nov. "Letter of intents" due to Georange
> 30 Dec. Decisions by scientific committee to invite informed to all
> 15 Feb. Proposals due from those invited
> 30-31/March Decision meeting on proposals
>
>The Georange research periods shall follow calendar year, which means for
>next reviewing period (year 2002) the following deadlines are valid:
> 15 Aug. Letters of intent due to Georange
> 15 Sept. Invitation for proposals
> 30 Oct. Final proposals due to Georange
> 01 Dec. Progress reports due to Georange for research conducted 2002
> 18-19 Dec. Decision meeting in Stockholm
>
