Colleagues,
I am compelled to respond to the expressions of support that have
appeared on this site in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in New York
and Washington D.C. As the mind grapples with the inconceivable nature of
these cowardly acts, it is comforting to know that the shock is universal
among the civilized people of the world. As the British Prime Minister,
Tony Blair, said so eloquently, this is not an attack just upon the United
States but upon all free and democratic societies. Over the last several
years I have been fortunate to travel to a number of international
meetings. I have been struck by strong feelings of good will and
cooperation among geoscientists of all nationalities, races, and religions
and I hope that such feelings extend to the larger population. We must all
do our part to ensure that cool heads prevail in the trying times I fear
are ahead of us.
Pavel, Richard, James, your thoughts are appreciated by me and, I am
sure, by my countrymen. We all need help at times like these and support
and assistance from our international friends will be gratefully received.
The atmosphere here in Denver today is surreal. It is a beautiful Fall
day, but too quiet and the only aircraft in the skies are the occasional
fighter from the air base in Colorado Springs. The lines at the local
blood donation centers are hours long and we are told that the only flights
out will be those carrying blood and relief supplies to the east coast.
