NOTICE OF POSTPONED MEETING

"Metals in the Weathering Environment from Ores to the Biosphere"

THIS MEETING WILL NOW BE HELD BETWEEN:

 22-23 October 2001

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Charles Curtis. Manchester. "The aqueous geochemistry of metals in the
supergene environment: strengths and weaknesses in our understanding of
speciation and process".

Jaques Jedwab. Belgium.  'Supergene alteration paths of platinum-group and
gold minerals, deduced from light and electron microscopy, and from EMP
microchemistry'.

Andrew Meharg. Aberdeen.  'Pollutant bioavailability in soils; from
molecular interactions to landscapes'.


LOCATION

The meeting will be held at Burlington House in the offices of the
Geological Society of London.  This offers first class presentation
facilities in the heart of London and is close to accommodation and all
amenities.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

If you wish to present a paper/poster you must submit an abstract by email
or on a PC formatted 3.5" floppy disk to the address below.  The abstract
should fill only one side of A4 text and may include references and up to
three extra pages for figures.  It should be submitted in 12pt Times New
Roman font, with justified margins and single spaced.  Title of the paper
should be followed by authors' names and a summary address.  These should
all be in bold and centred as follows:

A revolutionary new drilling mud based on nukundamite

References cited in the abstract should be in the following format:

Glover, P.W.J and Baud, P. (1995)  a/b phase transition in quartz monitored
using acoustic emissions.  Geophys. J. Int. 120, 775-782.

Please note if you have already offered a paper you must complete the
attached registration form and submit an abstract otherwise your paper will
be considered withdrawn.

Oral presentations will be limited to 20 minutes - 15 minutes of
presentation time, 5 minutes for questions.  Two screens will be available
with two 35mm slide projectors and two OHP projectors.  Alternatively, you
can present your paper as a poster (space 4 feet by 4 feet is available).
Time will be alloted in the programme for poster sessions.

Deadline for abstracts is 31st August 2001.

TIMETABLE

Registration forms and payment should be sent to the conveners as soon as
possible and certainly no later than 1st October 2001.  N.B. After 1st
October, registration fees will be increased

CONFERENCE PUBLICATION

It is intended to publish papers presented at the meeting in a special
thematic issue of the Mineralogical Magazine, the Journal of the
Mineralogical Society.  Authors wishing to submit a paper for publication
should indicate this on the attached registration form.  Instructions to
authors for preparation of their manuscript are given in Mineral. Mag. 1998,
62, 137-140.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

Registrants must make their own arrangements for accommodation and meals and
a list of hotels can be provided on request.

A conference dinner is planned for the evening of October 22 at a cost of
£25 per head.  Prepayment for the dinner before 1st October 2001 is
essential to guarantee a place.

REGISTRATION

Registration for the conference, which will include light refreshments, and
a copy of the abstract volume will be £22 before the 1st October 2001, £25
thereafter.  There is a reduced fee of £20 for full-time students
(countersignature by the student's head of department/supervisor will be
necessary to prove student status).

PAYMENT

Payment should be made by cheque or international money order and made
payable to 'Weathering 2001' Send payment to Susan Sim at the University of
Aberdeen (address on the registration form).
