For anyone interested in the recently announced closure of the Geological
Survey Branch (see mailing by Jan Peter, 11 Dec 01), here is the response I
received from the office of the Premier of BC.
Anyone know exploration mining companies that want to pay for regional
mapping programs?
Peter

Dear Mr. Stewart:
Thank you for your email regarding the future of mineral exploration
services in British Columbia.
As you may know, government has been reviewing all provincial programs and
activities to ensure they serve a critical purpose, produce measurable
results and are being delivered in the most effective and efficient way.
We have now identified the government's core roles and responsibilities and
will be implementing a new structure for government in order to make our
province one of the most attractive jurisdictions in which to do business.
We will focus our efforts on fostering investment and creating a competitive
economy.
Contrary to some recent reports, we are not eliminating geoscience work. We
are looking at continuing geoscience programs in a more focused
public-private partnership model. I believe that the key to a vibrant
economy for British Columbia is to build a strong private sector economy.
By encouraging the private sector to generate investment in this province
and to increase and enhance their economic activitity, I believe we can
provide better public services as well as more certainty and more
opportunities for British Columbians throughout the province.
We will have some difficult decisions to make in the coming months, but I
assure you that we will work hard to ensure responsible and accountable
decision-making. Although it will take time to renew prosperity and
confidence, we are committed to acting quickly to meet these challenges.
I appreciate your bringing your concerns to my attention and am confident
that the changes underway will benefit all British Columbians.
Sincerely,
Gordon Campbell
Premier

Dear Sir,
The announced closure of the Geological Survey Branch of BC is a horrendous
decision. Pleae reconsider this action before is is too late.
The BC mining industry is already in tatters due to actions of previous
governments. If you do not appreciate the value that provincial geological
surveys provide to the mining exploration industry, and the importance of
the mining sector to the BC economy you should resign!
a very concerned citizen,
Peter Stewart
