I think we are all forgetting the fact that metamorphic facies are
simply a phenomenological consequence of Duhem's theorem. This is
evident in Turner's definition of facies, and it is something that I
am sure Eskola knew (at least intuitively, if not in fact).
It seems that the "confusion", albeit quite understandable, lies in
the simple fact that not all metamorphic rocks have the same bulk
composition.
