Dear Listmember,
We would like to draw your attention to a short course on the use of laser
ablation ICP mass spectrometry for isotopic dating of U- and Th-bearing
accessory minerals. The short course will be one of many offerings that
will precede the Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry in
Scottsdale, Arizona, January 6 - 12 2002. A short course description
follows. Detailed information about the short course registration,
conference program, subscription and deadlines can be found at the
conference website www.chem.umass.edu/WinterConf2002.

U-Th-Pb Dating of Geological Samples by Laser Ablation ICP Mass Spectrometry
(Short course ST-20, Jan Kosler and Mike Tubrett)
January 5, 2002, Scottsdale, Arizona
The course will describe the techniques used to obtain isotopic ages of U
and Th bearing minerals. The topics covered will include optimization of
the laser and ICP mass spectrometer for precise measurement of isotopic
ratios, effects of laser wavelength and laser beam parameters on
fractionation and signal stability, correction procedures for laser-induced
fractionation of elements and instrument mass bias, and corrections for
initial Pb present in the minerals. Also discussed will be pros and cons of
isotopic ratio measurements in pulse counting and combined pulse
counting/analogue modes and most common applications. The short course is
intended for all potential users of this new dating technique as well as
ICPMS lab managers.
