Gender in Tantrism

Hindu and Buddhist Tantra is well-known for the prominent role it gives to
the feminine principle in its imagery and philosophy, and it represents a
goddess tradition that is still very much alive. Yet most tantric female
divinities are remarkable for their terrifying and gruesome iconography.
What is the significance of this imagery?
