avwmerge happily accepts unix wildcard substitutions. for example, if
you're trying to merge a load of volumes with a consistent naming
convention (vol0001.img, vol0002.img -> vol0400.img etc.) into one 4D
data set, use the syntax:
avwmerge -t outputname vol*.img
