it will be useful to talk about period terms more fully when the Timelines thesaurus is developed. As a museum with archaeology and social history collections, we are keen to balance both of these interests.
Our current approach is to use period terms up to the end of Stuart, then switch to centuries. Terms like 'Victorian' tend to carry a stylistic connotation rather than a specific date range, so we avoid them.
We define Post-Medieval as up to 1714, not beyond (the MIDAS maximum date of 1901 is not appropriate in our context).

Subject: Re: New terms in the RCHME Periods list
In response to an off-list enquiry:-
The suggested default date ranges for the new RCHME period terms that I sent
round yesterday are:-
TUDOR (1483 - 1603)
ELIZABETHAN (1558 - 1603)
STUART (1603 - 1714)
JACOBEAN (1603 - 1625)
HANOVERIAN (1714 -1837)
VICTORIAN (1837 - 1901)
EARLY 20TH CENTURY (1901 -1945)
LATER 20TH CENTURY (1945 - 2000)
NB - use of default date ranges should not discourage indexers from using
more precise start and end dates (in MIDAS terms Minimum and Maximum Date
units of information) where the information exists.
