Hello
I know they're not American films but I would say the late 60s essay films
of Jean-Luc Godard are fairly incomprehensible without an understanding of
the climate around the time of May 1968 in France. I'm thinking particularly
of _Two or Three Things I Know About Her_ (1966) _La Chinoise_ (1967) and
_Le Gai savoir_ (1968). But some people might argue that all of Godard's
films are meaningless without a degree of both high and popular cultural
knowledge-French and International.
By the way these films are hard work but give plenty of material to think
about after you've endured 90 minutes of non-pleasurable viewing.
(_La Chinoise_ is the most enjoyable,in my opinion .)
Claire.
