gary/holden's response to my [i thought] fairly
innocent observation is loaded . . . and i'm in
total agreement with some [though not all]
of the ammunition in that heavy duty shelling
. . . but in fact all i meant to suggest is that
even if we want to work with a general category
called the "aesthetic" [and i find it a useful
category for a variety of purposes] , the kind of
specific thing that can or will fill that category
will vary enormously, and culture is oen of the
things [among others] that will determine just
what is available for inclusion in that category
no more than that
i certainly was saying nothing aout the way
students learn, but since gary observes that
>>I don't see how the features of individual
>>aesthetic responses have anything to do
>>with *how* students learn to become
>>critical of the things they see or hear
it might be worth pointing out that cerrtain
kinds of "noticing" can involve ignoring those
things that normally attract your attention
to focus on others . . . to notice [in an easy
example] the camera work of a shot rather
than the represented action . . . and that this
minimal kind of distancing -- the possibility
of NOT noticing the politics of a scene, for
example -- is certainly not unconnected to
individual response
