I'm a member of East Riding Archaeology Society.
At a recent meeting we discussed the placename Coldharbour, which is
allegedly linked to Roman roads. A study of standard OS maps suggests that
for the main Coldharbour placenames this may only be partially true. In the
East Riding area there are at least two Coldharbour placenames (both farms,
one of which is an enclosure period farm) neither of which can be associated
with a known Roman road, but are in the vicinity (within 3km or so) of R-B
settlement evidence.
What is the view of people as to the derivation of this placename?
