Thanks, Paul. A wee correction: the _scotplace_ group is 'owned' by me but is
currently 'unmoderated' - I'll step in only if we get too much silly stuff! I
help maintain the SPNS website, under the editorship of Dr Ian Fraser of the
University of Edinburgh; although the website is hosted by the University of
St Andrews, where I have the honorary title of Research Assistant to Dr Simon
Taylor (in order to have remote access to their server!).
I come to place-names via archaeology and local history. I am particularly
interested in the early medieval period, in SW Scotland (and 'Greater
Cumbria' aka 'Strathclyde'), Britain and Northwest Europe. Ah, those illusory
borders! - plenty of English place-names in Scotland to keep us busy, and I
am also intrigued by Welsh, Cornish and Breton parallels to some of our local
place-names here in Dumfriesshire. Personal names are also of interest, not
least because of the considerable influence that Northumbria exerted on SW
Scotland from the 7th century onwards. I shall probably mainly 'lurk' here,
hoping to pick up the crumbs (or whole slices) of wisdom that will
undoubtedly fall from your learne/d table (hopefully not always butter-side
down)!
