Dear all,
I have been interested to read the emails concerning fracture
monitoring. Have you ever considered using acoustic emission (AE) or
microseismic (MS) monitoring in combination with the other measurements?
AE and MS are very small scale earthquakes occuring on fractures of
millimetres to centimetres in dimension when the fractures either grow
or when there are small movements associated with stress redistribution.
The beauty of the technique is that these movements can be localised
very accurately (millimetres in a 10m dimension structure) and hence can
show where the fractures/stress redistributions are. The techniques have
been used around underground storage facilities, mines, petroleum fields
and concrete structures. A good knowledge base of AE/MS research,
methods and applications can be found at the Liverpool University
Applied Seismology Laboratory headed by Prof. Paul Young:

Thanks,
Will.
