Here in the USA (or at least in Ohio) we only make note of
the "seating" penetration if the weight of the rod and/or
the hammer causes the split-spoon sampler to penetrate the
first 6-inch interval (150 mm) or more. For example, if the
penetration due to the weight of the hammer was 8 inches
(200 mm) and then it took 3 and 4 blows to penetrate the
next 4 and 6 inches (100 and 150 mm), respectively, the SPT
test data would be recorded as: WOH, 3, 4.
My impression from the other responses is that this is
similar to what is normally done in the UK, but that BS 1377
Part 9 would require one to record that the initial
penetration was 200 mm. Am I correct?
