Dear Alex
According to BS 1377 Part 9 it would appear that the test is not
carried to the standard if the initial penetration of the sampler under
the weight of the set up is not recorded.
I must admit that I have never done this and was not aware of it. I
think the question raised is how important this measurement is
unless you were getting noticeable settlements under self weight ie
generally very low N values.
Or more fundamentally what are standards designed and used for.
Surely they are only for guidance.
How would deviation from a code be seen by a lawyer if the
deviation was linked to a structural failure or personal accident?
As a young engineer these are questions I have often wondered
about when arguing with a client over deviations from the code.
