John
I thought that you might be interested in our research into the following:
Gallery of the Future are currently researching the use of an interactive
white board (linked to a computer with the developed programme) in relation
to drawing. A laser grid on the soft board produces a remarkably accurate
record of a drawing and tracks the location of pens as it is done. The
drawing can then be handled in various ways:
* the process of mark making can be re-run in real time
* the process can be stopped and reviewed at any point
* the drawing can be stored safely while parts are erased and different
end-states produced
* printouts can be made at any stage
The device reveals the process of drawing in ways that were impossible,
even in the immediate past.
The board will provide a unique resource for researchers - results may well
challenge many of our accepted ideas about the role of drawing. Gallery of
the Future are embarking on a project which will examine the process of
drawing with young children. We plan to utilise the unique aspects of the
device in order to fully engage children with the softboard process to
further our insight into children's creativity and imagination. Ultimately
we hope that the direct involvement in this process will enable us to have
greater access to their world of experience.
We are also developing some software to enable images from the soft board
to be web cast in real time.
I would be interested in continued updates of your research also.
With thanks
