GROUNDED IN EUROPE: TANZTHEATER AND ITS LEGACY
November 2001
A Practitioner Friendly Symposium with Talks, Workshops, Films and
Presentations
Grounded in Europe will trace the impact and legacy of the early period of
modern dance during the Weimar Republic in Germany known as Ausdruckstanz
(literally form of expression, expressiveness) and its most famous
practitioners, Mary Wigman and Kurt Jooss.
Contributions tracing the developments that originated in the seminal work
of these artists (and the work of human motion analyst Rudolf Laban) are
welcomed.
Through practical and discursive sessions, the symposium will investigate
not only the historical contexts out of which Tanztheater has emerged, but
also the impact it has had in particular in the area of choreographic and
devising processes, the education and training of the performer, the effect
it has had on audiences for the performing arts, as well as the other
cultural contexts within which new manifestations of dance theatre have
emerged.
As with all CPR symposia events, this project is structured to enable a
productive interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange between a diverse range
of specialists - choreographers, dancers, directors, historians, cultural
anthropologists, performers, dance educators, semioticians and writers -
mapping dance theatre and its vibrant diaspora.
We would like to invite proposals of interest in participating in this
project either as a presenter, speaker, workshop leader, performer or
participant (to be sent to CPR by June 29th 2001.)
Grounded in Europe: Tanztheater marks a progression and transition from the
Past Masters series of projects designed by CPR to explore and re-evaluate
the work and influence of some of the great reformers of 20th Century
performance. Past Masters (95-00) has been a huge success generating
extraordinary training opportunities for professionals, a forum for debate
between practitioners and scholars and a crucible generating new knowledge
within the field of study. Its essence was to bring together practitioners
and scholars to exchange views and skills, meeting and working within the
context of contemporary theatre - from its roots to all its current
diversity.
Symposium Prices (for delegates): £95 (unwaged); £185 (waged); £225
(institutional rate). Please contact the CPR for further details on Grounded
in Europe practical workshops.
