Subject: Gender and Culture: Major Conference

Conference Announcement:

Women's Studies Network (UK) Association 14th Annual Conference

Gender and Culture: leisure, consumption and women's everyday lives

12th - 14th July 2001, Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher
Education,
UK

The Leisure and Sport Research Unit at Cheltenham and Gloucester College
of
Higher Education is pleased to announce the 2001 Women's Studies Network
(UK) Association conference. The conference will provide a major
inter-disciplinary event exploring the intersections of gender with
contemporary culture and consumption.

The conference will draw together participants from across the social
sciences and humanities to engage with new developments in feminist and
gender theory, policy, practice and activism. Art, fashion, film,
leisure,
literature, media, shopping, sport, television, and tourism will all be
explored as cultural sites and sights that play significant roles in
forming, performing and reforming contemporary gender relations,
identities,
and spaces. Major national and international researchers in cultural
studies, gender studies, geography, leisure studies, literary studies,
media
studies, social policy, sociology, sports studies, tourism studies,
visual
arts, and women's studies will lead discussions examining gender and
culture
in relation to three major themes:

        * leisure space, violence and the city
        *       consumption, fashion and (life)style
        * language, media and visual culture

Submission of abstracts

Researchers, lecturers, policy makers, practitioners, activists and
postgraduate students are invited to submit abstracts of papers.
Abstracts
of 300-400 words, together with brief biographical details of the
researcher(s)/presenter(s) (maximum of 200 words), should be submitted
to
the Conference Administrator by February 12th 2001. Abstracts should
contain:
* name of researcher/presenter, title and organisational
affiliation
where appropriate
* title of paper and conference theme to which the paper is
submitted
* 300-400 word summary of the context, theoretical and/or subject
underpinning and findings

It is proposed to publish selected papers in two edited book collections
with major publishers and negotiations are currently underway to secure
further outlets for publication in themed international refereed
journals.
