Dear Doctoral Students:

Please join us at the Academy meetings this August for the fourth annual

Critical Management Studies (CMS) Professional Development Workshop and
Doctoral Consortium.

The CMS program begins on Friday with two tutorials -- one on power and
politics (1 to 3:30 pm) and another on ethics (4 to 6:30 pm) -- and
continues through Sunday at noon with a series of plenary, parallel, and

small-group sessions. Key themes include: knowledge work/ers,
globalization, gender-race-class, and pedagogy. Invited plenary
speakers
include Mayer Zald (University of Michigan), Senator Paul Wellstone
(tbc),
and Richard Trumka (AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer). The full program,
background on the CMS group, and pre-registration information are
available
at http://aom.pace.edu/cms/.

IS THE CRITICAL MANAGEMENT STUDIES WORKSHOP FOR ME?

The Critical Management Studies (CMS) Workshop is an informal group
within
the Academy of Management. Participants in CMS are inspired by a variety
of
intellectual and political traditions, but we support each other in
developing scholarship, teaching, and practice that encourage economic
justice, human development, ecological sustainability, and class, race,
and
gender equity. CMS is a lively, international group whose PDW provides
an
opportunity for both intellectual stimulation and mentoring.

OUTLINE OF THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM

As part of the CMS PDW program, we are planning a doctoral consortium,
which
consists of two sessions:

(1) Friday August 3, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, Focus on Careers

During this session, students and faculty will meet and learn about each

others experiences, ambitions, and concerns regarding careers in
academia.
Students will hear from, and have opportunities to discuss issues with,
the
following faculty members:
·George Watson (University of South Florida)
·Grace Ann Rosilie (New Mexico State University)
·Tony Tinker (Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY))
·Bart Victor (Vanderbilt University)

(2) Sunday August 5, 9 - 10:30 am, Doctoral Workshop on Research

During this session, small groups of students will be matched with a
faculty
member with whom they will discuss their research interests and
brainstorm
ways to approach these topics:
·Terry Cobb (Virginia Tech)
·Jim Gilbert (University of Maryland)
·Art Brief (Tulane University)
·Tony Tinker (Baruch College, City University of New York)
·Mike Reed (Lancaster University)
·David Boje (New Mexico State University)
·Ann Cunliffe (University of New Hampshire)
·Jim Barker (U.S. Air Force Academy)
·Barbara Townley (University of Edinburgh)
·John Hassard (University of Manchester Institute of Science and
Technology)
·Elena Antonapocolou (Manchester University)
·Bart Victor (Vanderbilt University)
·Mitch Abolafia (State University of New York, Albany)

TO PARTICIPATE:

Please preregister with Naomi Olson at [log in to unmask] by July 1, 2001.
Naomi will give you more details and explain how to pay the fee ($40 for

students) to cover the cost of two receptions and two breakfasts.
Please
include the following information:
·Your name and contact information;
·Whether you would like to attend either or both of the Friday afternoon

tutorials (see http://aom.pace.edu/cms/workshopframe.html);
·Whether you have a preference for a particular faculty member for the
research session;
