WORTH REPEATING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"European businesses have a chance to learn from the mistakes made by
their counterparts in the US"
President of market research firm Gartner, Bill McDermott, in the
keynote speech at the Gartner Europe Spring Symposium/ITxpo 2001.
THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~
NUA AGE ENDS: Nua, the Irish Internet consultancy that became world
famous for its "How many online?" estimates, has gone into
receivership. Nua had been struggling with reported debts of £800,000
(1.3 million euros) and had failed to attract new funding from either
Eircom, which owns 20 per cent of the company, or outside investors.
LES SCOOTEURS: Scoot.com and Vivendi Universal last week officially
launched their joint venture, Scoot.fr. The companies said the
directory service, which will be available online, over the telephone
and via French mobile phone firm SFR's network, will break even in the
first half of 2003. Scoot.fr is owned by Scoot Europe, a 50-50 joint
venture between Scoot.com and Vivendi Universal - which in turn owns
22 per cent of parent company Scoot.com. Scoot.fr will go head to head
with Pages Jaunes, the directory service offered by France Telecom's
Internet subsidiary Wanadoo. In a related development, French scouts
are considering a lawsuit against the new company after the Scoot.fr
adverts borrowed the scouting motto "Be Prepared".
ALOHA AOL: Despite the new economy's doldrums, AOL is signing up
subscribers in Europe at a rapid pace. It won 1.4 million new
subscribers last year, taking its membership to 4.6 million - an
increase of 40 per cent over the previous year. According to Michael
Lynton, president of AOL International, the company aims to become the
top ISP in each of the major European markets.
WHIZZ-BANG: Television group Granada said it would close its
G-wizz.net Web portal and ISP business after disappointing results and
heavy costs. The broadcaster now plans to concentrate on maintaining
individual sites for its premier TV shows, including Coronation
Street.
CLICK OFF: Advertising network DoubleClick laid off staff across its
14 offices in Europe in a bid to become profitable. The company blamed
a drop in online media spending across Europe for the cost-cutting
exercise, which will see 200 jobs go worldwide. Figures for its fourth
quarter to December 2000 showed a pre-tax loss of just under $150
million (167 million euros), compared to a deficit of $41 million (46
million euros) over the same period in 1999.
LASTDITCH.COM: Brent Hoberman, Martha Lane Fox and Allan Leighton -
the three top executives at troubled Net retailer Lastminute.com -
moved to bolster the company's terrible share price by collectively
buying roughly £60,000 (96,000 euros) worth of stock just after the
price had fallen to a record low. Share dealers acknowledged that the
trio's act was a show of faith in their own company, but the stock
stubbornly refused to rise. It even dipped slightly.
JUST SAY NEIN: German authorities said they didn't plan any legal
action against Internet portal Yahoo over online auctions of copies of
Adolf Hitler's book Mein Kampf, which is banned in Germany. Meanwhile
the UEJF, the Jewish student union that sued Yahoo, is now after
Napster for being "an exchange platform for Nazi and neo-Nazi hymns".
STONE COLD: Norwegian online recruitment site StepStone has laid off
40 per cent of its staff in France. Out of 130 total employees in
France, StepStone has let 45 people go and offered six others
positions in different cities. The recruitment site, founded in 1996,
operates in 18 countries and hopes to become profitable by the
beginning of next year.
THE DEEPEST CUT: The Razorfish Web agency parted company with three of
its longest-serving executives. Mike Beeston, strategic development
director of Europe, Mark Curtis, head of global skills and practice,
and Neil Crofts, head of strategy, all resigned a fortnight after
Razorfish executed a company-wide round of 400 layoffs, representing
more than 20 per cent of staff across the globe.

BY THE NUMBERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The senior British businessperson is a modest soul, at least where
e-business initiatives are concerned. In a recent study, only 13 per
cent of respondents felt they were "leading the industry" - even
though the same study classified 21 per cent of those surveyed as
"e-pioneers", who had already implemented advanced Web functions.
