ECITE 2001 Mini-track
Critical Approaches to the Evaluation of Information Technology
Monday 17 September 2000
Oriel College, Oxford
Track Chair: - Dr Carole Brooke, University of Lincolnshire and
Humberside
‘Postmodernism’, ‘post-modernism’, ‘critical thinking’, ‘critical
systems theory’ and other approaches have been on the increase in the
management literature over the last decade or so. Although these
approaches represent a very wide range of opinions and preferences, they
have one thing in common: the critique of dominant theory and practice,
notably of ‘traditional’ rationalist approaches to management.
Although various forums exist for these debates to take place within a
broad management context, there are few places where the debate is
focused on Information Technology evaluation in particular. Also, the
different approaches are rarely brought together. For example, the
arguably more rationalist work of critical systems theorists rarely gets
debated in the same place as that of ‘postmodern’ research practice.
Barriers seem to exist between the works of different approaches. This
stream offers a space for debate and reflection with fewer barriers.
Paradigm incommensurability notwithstanding, we invite you to take part
in this event. The stream will consist of a keynote introduction
followed by about 9 papers during the day. Although the conference
operates within a rational structure, opportunities will exist for
alternative forms of presentation. These can be discussed with the
Chair of the stream, Dr. Carole Brooke.
Please send a 500 word abstract of your paper or a description of your
suggested alternative to Carole before the closing deadline of 30 April
2001.
