CULTURAL STUDIES: BETWEEN POLITICS AND ETHICS
An International Interdisciplinary Conference
Bath Spa University College, UK
6-8 July 2001
Keynote speakers:
Simon Critchley
Ernesto Laclau
Angela McRobbie
Mark Poster
Lola Young
Cultural studies is often defined as a political project. But the
problem of ethics,
with rare exceptions, has generally been associated with disciplines
such as
philosophy, political theory or deconstruction-oriented literary theory.
One could argue, however, that cultural studies - in its questioning of
inherited
traditions and cultural prejudices and its interest in ^marginal voices^
- is
intrinsically ethical. In focusing on the interconnections between
ethics and politics
in cultural studies, we want to investigate the duties and
responsibilities of
cultural studies, as well as delineate some new ways of practising ^the
political^.
For parallel sessions we invite 20 minute papers from a variety of
disciplines and approaches on a range of themes, including:
Is cultural studies political enough?
The spectre of Marxism in cultural studies
New identities, new politics
Respect for the ^other^: a postcolonial perspective
The ethics of everyday life
Gender, ethics and difference
The governance of cyberspace
The politics of literature
Bioethics and genethics
Culture and ethics
Is there a duty in cultural studies?
