CYBER -SOCIETY-LIVE [CSL]: A PRIMER
Hi all,
Joanne and I felt we needed to put something on the list for all those
members who have recently joined and to update existing members about CSL.
CSL MODERATION
CSL is a moderated list. However, neither Joanne nor I are really interested
in moderation much. In fact, most of the moderation that does take place
does so behind the scenes and is designed to prevent commercial garbage
appearing on the list. CSL members would not believe the amount of emails we
receive of this kind. Generally speaking, we put most things that are sent
to us on CSL. However, apart from the key word, technology, (defined very
broadly to include everyone in the social sciences and the humanities and
anyone else who is interested) our main aim is to provide a high content
(approximately 1-6 messages per week day) but high quality information
machine for people who are serious about understanding technology. Mostly,
we do not post the list over weekends and the list closes during UK academic
breaks (Christmas, Easter, and, usually, July and August).
CSL DISCUSSION
We want to take this opportunity to encourage more discussion on the list!
CSL MEMBERSHIP
We think it is fair to say that CSL is largely made up of people who are
more than interested in the interdisciplinary academic study of Cyber
Society in all its manifestations. By far the majority of members are
academics, researchers, undergraduates and postgraduates in the social
sciences and the humanities. There are, though, quite a number of people on
the list who fall outside these categories such as artists and political
activists, business people and others who work in government institutions
around the world. We would especially like to encourage practitioners
outside the academy to contribute their thoughts and work to CSL.
As far as CSL membership is concerned, it is certainly not as big as some
e-lists. However, at the present time, there are over 500 people on CSL
around the world. It is truly a global list. If members post to CSL, the
message goes to people in the following countries; Canada; the USA; Mexico;
Brazil; Uruguay; Chile; Russia; Ukraine; Korea; Japan; Taiwan; Singapore;
Philippines; Australia; New Zealand; Israel; UK; Spain; Portugal; France;
Norway; Denmark; Finland; Sweden; Germany; Austria; Switzerland; Italy;
Romania; Slovakia; Poland; Macedonia; Greece; and United Arab Emirates.
There are bound to be countries we have missed out since not everyone's
email discloses the country of origin but the picture is pretty clear.
CSL ADMINISTRATION
If CSL members want to leave, rejoin, or simply browse the archives of CSL,
all you have to do is go to the home page which is located here:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/cyber-society-live.html
Members can always retrieve an article easily from the home page. Moreover,
messages to CSL appear almost simultaneously in the archives.
Best wishes to you all.
John & Joanne.
