Obsession
Interdisciplinary Conference in History and Cultural Studies, 3-5 July
2003
Bath Spa University College
Obsession is not just a perfume: it is also a powerful leitmotif in
culture
and history. The word itself is potent, speaking simultaneously of
allure
and danger. This conference aims to explore the relations between
particular
obsessions, fascinations and fixations, and the production and/or
frustration of knowledge and other such powerful discourses. In
particular,
it seeks to examine the racial and gender problematics of Obsession and
the
status of Obsession in the formation of subjectivity and/or agency.
The cultural and historical diversity of Obsession provides an exciting
opportunity to investigate a wide range of themes over the course of a
3-day
conference.
Some of the possible strands may include:
Psychology & Obsession Crime, Conspiracy & Obsession
Obsession & Possession Fantasy & Obsession
Religion & Obsession Obsession & Technology
Obsession & the Body Film & Obsession
Sex, Gender & Obsession Obsession & Politics
Obsession & Sport The Obsessive Gaze
We invite proposals for papers of 20-30 minutes in length from
individuals
or panels. Please send abstracts of 200-300 words and a one-page CV to
Dr
Paul Bowman [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> by 31
