The Economic and Social Impact of E-Commerce
(Editors - Dr Sam Lubbe and Ms Joh-Mari van Heerden)
E-Commerce has brought about many changes in organisation and
quality of life that affects us directly as individual or indirectly
as
members of the Society. The need to have fast and efficient
information
on products is crucial to our socially conscious and technology
dependent society, hence information technology has increased the
intolerable burden of handling the increasing amount of information
and
human errors which the society is expected to contend with.
PROPOSALS should try and address some of the following topics
but are not limited to the ideas mentioned below:
· Introduction to the issues of economic and social impact of e-
commerce
· Creation of new products and new services mean new jobs and
retraining of staff
· The use of industry standards controlled by computers could
result
in a level of productivity attained by new processes and this could
result
in reducing the cost of production.
· The increase in leisure time because of flexible working hours
(soho?) could create a demand for more leisure facilities and this
could
impact on the community.
· The use of IT frequently leads to increased efficiency in terms
of
minimising wastage and raising the quality of the output.
· There are always applications in which time is critical apart
from
consideration of cost and safety. With the Internet it is possible
to
create models that can simulate the actual and likely condition to
solve
the problem quickly and economically.
· In commercial organizations cash flow forecasting and debt
collection had always been a problem that could increase as e-
commerce is introduced.
