Unilever's Mercury Fever
http://www.corpwatch.org/un/updates/2001/unilever.html
In March a community in Southern India discovered that a thermometer
factory, operated by the Indian subsidiary of the transnational giant
Unilever, had dumped seven and a half tons of mercury tainted waste in a
local scrap yard. After protests by residents, the company closed the
plant. But community members charge that Unilever down played the
dangers and tried to cover-up the extent of the disaster. That behavior
directly violates the responsible business principles that Unilever
pledged to uphold when it signed onto the UN Global Compact. Indian
journalist Nityanand Jayaraman visited the town of Kodaikanal and
reports for CorpWatch.
TAKE ACTION
Urgent: Stop Fast Track!!
http://www.corpwatch.org/action/2001/025.html
Congress is using the September 11th tragedy to push through Fast Track
legislation that would give President Bush sweeping powers to implement
the Free Trade in the Americas Agreement. Under Fast Track, Congress
gives up its authority to change the content of trade agreements. The
bill could come up for a vote in Congress as soon as next week. Call
your Representatives and tell them not to sign away their power on trade
issues. Tell Congress to vote NO on Fast Track.
